Training Program

Crossbar soccer training improves athletes technically, tactically and physically by training approximately 12 to 15 hours a week. Crossbar Academy staff combines elements from different training methodologies, creating a unique, player-focused developmental environment.

Athletes begin each technical session with a functional athletic warm-up, strengthening key muscle groups as well as decreasing the risk of injuries in training. Athletes then move on to a technical session providing them with the functional skills to be an asset at any position. The technical training develops players at the lowest element of the game: 1v1/2v2. Players develop their technical ability – and the confidence to use their skills – to have an impact by creating game-changing opportunities.

During tactical training, Crossbar athletes use their technical skills in game-like situations. Athletes are introduced to a tactical theme or idea in a small-sided game or activity, and gradually the playing field and the number of players increases. Players are exposed to the roles and responsibilities of all positions, seek to involve all teammates in play, learn to read the game, develop their movement off the ball, and continually get touches on the ball while playing.`

In addition to field training, Crossbar athletes are exposed to pregame briefings and walkthroughs prior to games. Teams are informed of lineups, responsibilities and roles, as well as attacking and defending principles and objectives in a classroom setting. Pregame also consists of watching film of previous games to highlight successes and areas of improvement. Crossbar athletes also receive video postgame feedback as a team and as individuals. This element is an integral part in enhancing the player’s understanding and knowledge of the game.

Finally, Crossbar athletes are provided with mental training and Christian spiritual teaching in order to handle setbacks and loss. Crossbar athletes are given the tools and expectation to be humble in victory, gracious in defeat; and to compete at the highest levels and see failure as an essential part of the development process.

The Crossbar training environment focuses on developing and teaching the game; and during the developmental phase, winning is a by-product of intelligent soccer.
